(More customer reviews)My wife loves a good cup of tea and in the past, we just left the kettle on very low heat on the stove.The other night I came home to the smell of gas.The breeze had blown out the flame and my wife, who had a really bad cold, was upstairs and could not smell the gas.

Time to get something a bit safer while we still had a house!After some research, we ordered this electric kettle (to the joy of my wife's British friends who think we are barbarians for not having one.)

I was astounded at how fast this thing heats water, maybe 5 minutes for a mostly full pot from tap-cold to full rolling boil.

The automatic shut-off works perfectly (and has a small light so youneed not guess if it is off or on) and we no longer need to worry about errant gas fumes and whistling kettles.

The kettle is well-made, attractive and seems to be sturdy and definitely works a treat.Get one and you won't be dissappointed.Needs a three-prong outlet, so make sure you can use it first.Sides do get hot but the handle stays properly cool and the safety lid works very nicely with no drops or leaks that I have seen.

(More customer reviews)This is a beautiful kettle and it boils water very, very quickly.But the reviews about the the foul chemical smell and taste are correct, at least with mine.I chose to ignore the bad reviews regarding the smell and I bought this two weeks ago.As soon as I unpacked it I could detect what the other reviewers were referring to.Every night since I got the kettle, a solution of either vinegar and water, baking soda and water, or lemon juice and water has sat in my kettle, all to no avail. I called Capresso after the first week and the customer service rep acknowledged the problem and suggested the lemon juice.She was very nice and told me to be sure to call back if that didn't work. After a week of trying the lemon juice, I still got the foul smell and taste in the water.I use filtered water that tastes fine before it goes into this kettle.When I called Capresso back, as directed by the first rep with whom I spoke, the rep who answered my call told me that I could send it back and they would replace it with one that "has been tested and doesn't have the smell," but that I would have to pay for the shipping.I didn't feel that I should have to pay for shipping so I asked to speak to his supervisor.The supervisor told me there are no problems with the kettles; he is unaware of any chemical odors and that I could pay for the shipping or return it to where I purchased it and have them replace it.When I explained that I wanted one of the ones his rep told me have been tested and have no odor, he denied all of that as being completely false.He got very nasty and said he could care less that I wasn't happy with my kettle.

I am especially disappointed in Capresso and their customer service.We have been loyal Capresso customers with their coffee products and have never been disappointed.The kettle, however, has been a big let down.I am an avid tea drinker; the chemical taste is that is getting into the water when it is heated is beyond discernible, it is prominent even in cocoa and strong tea.If this is going to matter to you, don't buy it.It is really a shame because it is a beautiful kettle and does work well.But I am tired of dumping out undrinkable cups of tea due to a foul taste and am returning this.

(More customer reviews)I spent hours researching every electric kettle available (and looking at them in person, in stores) before settling on this one.I've owned it for about 6 months now, and it's been great.The concealed heating element and the simple one-piece plastic jug design make it very easy to clean (not that I've needed to) and leak resistant (I assume, from a design perspective, since mine has no leaks yet).The only way it could leak is if the grommet sealing the metal bottom piece to the plastic jug developed a leak, whereas most of the stainless steel kettles being sold have several parts, many seams, and thus many places a leak could develop. There is some mild browning of the plastic inside the jug, I suppose a reaction to the high heat.This same thing happened with my roommate's older plastic electric kettle, so it's to be expected.People complain about plastic vs. stainless steel, I settled on plastic for one primary reason: it is a better insulator, so not only will it keep the water hotter for longer, it will be safer to handle in general (ie. it won't burn you or a child if it is accidentally picked up by its sides while it contains hot water).People complain about plastic "leeching chemicals" into the water, I haven't noticed any difference in taste, personally, and I doubt stainless steel would be much "safer" than plastic in this respect.The switch works great, and mine has never spilled water or over-boiled it (as long as it contains the minimum recommended amount of water).The spout and handle shapes make it easy to pour, and the locking top makes it pretty tough to spill.Definitely recommended, I'm buying another one for my parents right now.

PS - While researching electric kettles, I frequently saw complaints of how kettles designed for use in the USA don't heat water as fast as those in the UK.This is for a very simple reason: UK uses 240 volt power, USA uses 120 volts.Most electrical receptacles are rated for 15 amps (though the kitchen are often has at least two 20-amp circuits, per NEC recommendations).Watts = volts * amps, which means that UK kettles can get up to 240 volts * 15 amps = 3600 watts, while USA kettles can get up to 120 volts * 15 amps = 1800 watts.Manufacturers might sometimes avoid approaching this limit, perhaps due to safety or liability issues?Just note that this 1750 watt Tfal kettle is very close to the typical USA receptacle wattage rating.It's just about as high as you'll be able to get in the USA...most other USA electric kettles only go up to 1500 watts.

Down to 1 star, if they'd let me edit the star rating part of this review. I have updated my review to 1 star (per the request of some commenters).

This is my original review, when I gave it 4 stars:

"When I first received my West Bend Electric Kettle, I was so excited because it has everything I want. It boils water faster than my previous kettle, it has a nice round base so the kettle can spin (in case I have to grab the handle from different angles), and the design is very clean and sensible. The water level is sort of hard to see through the blue plastic, but it's fine.

I almost came here and wrote my rave review just a couple days after receiving it, but now I'm glad I waited a few weeks. The lid doesn't open on its own anymore. There is a little button at the top which is supposed to pop the lid open, and now it gets stuck. Now I have to hold the button down and bang on the lid until it catches "just right". This is annoying. I don't like having to bang on my tea kettle.

This isn't the most expensive kettle out there, but it's also not the cheapest. I would expect the lid to work properly. It's annoying, but the most important thing is that it boils water, and it boils it fast, so at the least the main functionality seems to be top notch."

(More customer reviews)If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.

I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)

The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).

Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.

It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.

Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.

Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

(More customer reviews)We've been using this kettle at work just fine. It's very light weight but has a tall receptacle that holds the kettle well so we're not concerned about tip over.

It boils incredibly fast & has a nice comfortable handle & easy to use lid release.

Make sure you follow the initial instructions to boil 3x letting cool each time, before the first use to remove any foul taste.

The element is not "protected" so we'd expect scale to build up, but that's easily cleaned.

Only gripe is that the filter seems to fall out when tipped upside down. Even so, can recommend this kettle as a low cost but perfectly functional kettle.

We bought one of these for our home and liked it so much I got another for my office. It is a quick safe way to boil water. It works much better than our teapot on our conventional stove and you can leave the room without worry about all the water boiling out and a possible fire.
It is so efficient that we often use it to heat up water before putting it in a pan on the stove. It is much faster. When we are making pasta we will put a small amount of water in a large pan and fill the teapot. The water in the pot is boiling before the water on the stove. The pot is light, even when full, and has no aftertaste like I have read some of the plastic ones do.
HOWEVER, we had owned our home pot for less than six months when the 'on' switch broke off. The pot was still usable, but you have to reach in and activate it with a fingernail. It was under limited warranty, but that involved mailing it to San Diego at our own cost and sending them a check for $8 to have it returned. Including the time and materials to package it up and then drive to the post office and have it gone for 2-4 weeks wasn't worth the effort.
I have concluded we just got a lemon. Because this happened and the warranty policy was so cumbersome, I originally gave this 3 stars. But our other one is working fine and the broken piece has turned out to be a small inconvenience, so I have revised my rating to 4.6, rounding up to 5.
