Zojirushi Micom 3.0-Liter Electric Airpot Water Boiler, White Review

We own one for over 6 years now.Love it.Only problem is that because it's mechanical (air pump), that eventually wears out.I think the seal in the pump need replacing. It used to to fill a cup with just one pump, but now takes 10 or more pumps.
Other than that, I love it.I am looking at purchasing a new one, the kind that uses electric pump.

Adagio Teas 3 UtiliTEA Variable-Temperature 30-Ounce Electric Kettle Review

Adagio Teas 3 UtiliTEA Variable-Temperature 30-Ounce Electric Kettle
Average Reviews:

This kettle fills a long-time need in the electric kettle marketplace -- one with a variable temperature control! For those who are real tea appreciators, you will appreciate finally having an electric kettle that allows you different temperature settings for your different kinds of tea.

Other great features are that it heats the water quickly, in under 5 minutes. It has an automatic shut-off when it reaches the set temperature. It will not boil dry (I haven't tested this feature, but the literature claims it to be true). It looks sleek and modern sitting on your countertop with its stainless steel and black stylings as compared to the white plastic electric kettles of yore.It also has the convenient design feature of the cord coiling into the base, so you only have to pull out as much as you need to reach your outlet.

I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for a couple of reasons. Most importantly, because it gets hot hot hot to the touch.Be careful, or you will burn yourself.Make sure to only touch the plastic parts, which isn't always so easy.Secondarily, because the temperature control knob and the on/off switch are made of flimsy plastic -- the rest of it is well made, but the second time I pushed the on/off switch it popped off!Luckily, it is easily re-attachable.

I am glad someone finally put one of these out on the market!

Product Description:
Perfect for tea lovers, this electric kettle features an innovative temperature-control system for easily heating water to a specific temperature. Black teas brew nicely with water brought to a full boil, but green and white teas steep best at a slightly lower temperature. Using the clearly marked variable-temperature control knob, the electric kettle can be set to boil like a normal kettle or to a pre-boil temperature for lower-temperature teas--no need to add cool water to boiling water and no more guessing at when the kettle's about to boil. The unit quickly heats up to 30 ounces of water, and can maintain a consistent temperature without reaching the boiling point. When set to boil, the kettle provides hot water not only for black tea, but can also be used for making hot cocoa, instant noodles, or oatmeal. Other thoughtful details include a concealed heating element, a cordless carafe, a handy water-level gauge on the side, a power indicator light, and a flip-top lid button for convenient filling. Made in China and housed in durable stainless steel, the sleek-looking electric teakettle measures approximately 8-1/5 by 6-4/5 by 9-1/5 inches.

Zojirushi CD-WBC40 Micom 4-Liter Electric Water Boiler and Warmer, Champagne Gold Review

Zojirushi CD-WBC40 Micom 4-Liter Electric Water Boiler and Warmer, Champagne Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Who spends money on fancy water heaters? People who like to have fine control over the brewing of their tea. Also, probably some folks who like to have unusual gadgets so they can rub it in the faces of those who are less awesome, but for the sake of this review let's pretend you're not one of those people.

This particular Zojirushi holds enough water for 2-3 people to drink throughout the day. It boils the water first -- this takes about 15-20 minutes -- and then allows it to cool to one of four "keep warm" temperatures. The "keep warm" presets of 208, 195, 175, and 140 are perfect for most kinds of tea, cup o' noodles, baby bottles, and various kinds of water torture on intrusive guests.

The magnetic break-away cord is a fantastic feature that demonstrates Zojirushi's attention to detail. When your mother decides to rearrange your kitchen without warning, you can rest assured that the Zojirushi will be safe from electrical mishaps. Don't ask how I know this.

Other safety features include an automatic shut-down when it runs out of water, a dispenser that will not dispense until you "unlock" it by pressing a button, and a "steam-save" design that limits the amount of steam being vomited into your kitchen. This last feature is especially nice for those of us with wall cabinets extending over the counter. I like to steam my food on the stove, not while it's in storage, thanks.

This device is so simple to use that even my husband can do it. That said, due to the charming Engrish in the instruction book, at first I was under the impression that the timer existed to shut down the machine. I realized later that either my math skills were terrible, or in reality the timer was designed to start it up. Ignore the fact that I ended that sentence with a preposition. The point still stands. The good news is that having a timed start-up is more useful to me than a timed shut-down, so for once I was glad to discover further evidence that I am an idiot.

I had one concern prior to purchase. Would teapots fit under the dispenser? I am pleased to report that they can, despite the best efforts of the Zojirushi photographers to make it look like the spout is designed to work with cups alone. If you have an epic teapot that serves 300, you might have a problem getting it up under there. But a normal pot? Rock on.

This little device is now my favorite appliance next to the washing machine. Because as much as I love tea, I like clean underwear better.

Note: Confused about which Zojirushi water heater to purchase? Check the comparison chart! Amazon links to this chart in the product description, but the average person manages to miss it. It's like a ninja, but with fewer pointy edges.

--

Edit: It's now been over a year since I got my Zojirushi, and I am pleased to report that it still works like it's new. I have cleaned it twice with Zojirushi's cleaner -- sold in packets here on Amazon -- despite it never really looking like it needed cleaning at all. I did it simply because the company recommended it. I'm a follower like that. The Zojirushi has survived a move, three extreme power surges, and a switch to mineral-heavy tap water. I'm starting to wish Zojirushi had made my own body. I mean, think of the time I could save if I only have to be cleaned up twice a year! And I didn't survive the move in nearly as good a condition. Tsk. At least I'm not old enough for power surges yet.

My old Zojirushi water boiler conked out after 8 years of regular use, so I ordered the CD-WBC30. Features have gotten better in 8 years: the LCD display shows the temperature, and I have 4 thermostat settings instead of two. I used to have to choose between 208 degrees (too hot) and 140 degrees (too cold). I can now also select 195 degrees and 175 degrees. The 175 degree setting is just fine for instant coffee and oatmeal. I've used this boiler for two months without problems.

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black Review

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.

I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)

The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).

Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.

It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.

Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.

Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

I am a recently disabled adult that cannot get enough of a good cup of tea. So seeing this I thought it would make a nice birthday present for me, and make life a little easier around the kitchen. It performs as it says it will.

It looks bulky but is surprisingly lightweight and easy to handle. The whole unit spins on a lazy-susan device making it east to direct the steam vent away from kitchen surfaces.

You will need a water pitcher of some kind to fill this easily.I have a medium sized one sand simply filly the pitcher twice to fill this device once. The handle on top, removable lid, and notched corner makes emptying and cleaning a breeze.

The temperature features are splendid and accurate, there are three:
205for noodles/ramen etc, herbal infusions, pu-er, Assam and some other black teas..
195For Darjeeling or delicate blacks like Illam valley are at this temperature as well, let the water sit a few minutes in the brew pot befor adding tea leaves, if you have a very delicate tea.
175for green or white teas.A few of the more delicate whites fill the tea pot first, then add the leaves. By filling your teapot dry first, this allows the water to lose 5-10F by just warming the pot. Often enough to make a better flavored tea.

On a given day I can go from pu-er tsocha right from boiling, and set the temp to 195.Make a pot of bold assam in the afternoon when at a full boil, then set the temp to 175. Now, after dinner it is set for making jasmine tea for dessert. All with a minimal energy usage and cost.

I have found it a good idea to refill it only 1-2 times then empty the remains, give it a brush inside with a towel, and then let it completely dry.My scale buildup was reduced quite a bit this way.

For a fully able person this unit -is- a bit of a luxury.A simple electric teapot with temperature control would do you just fine for a fraction of the initial cost. This will make cost up over time by the thermos nature though, just a fyi.

Have a chain tea drinker in your life though or thoughts for limited commercial use (like a small teahouse), or like tea but have a very full life and time schedule? This would make a great gift for you or even a small splurge to treat yourself.UPDATE:
Almost two years later and it not only looks fine but functions just as well as the day I got it.I have to descale it about every 9 months or so.Other than that it is pretty maintenance free. Talk about longer term bang for your buck.If you drink tea or would use boiling water on a daily basis, this is a staple for your kitchen.

Some other uses I found. When making soup, rice, thinning a sauce, or deglazing a pan fill your measuring device from the Zojirushi set in slow pour. I now use water from the boiler and the hot water not only speeds up the process, but some flavors are left alone because the room temp water would have cooled the dish and altered the flavors.

I have also found the steel finish wipes very easily. A friend who bought the white version has some staining that stubbornly persists to this day. All in all if you get one you will not be disappointed.

(small edits made above with input from trial and error over the period I've owned this boiler.)

I love this little pot!It boils water and cooks everything very fast!!I have one at home and one for my travels. This little hot pot is terrific when one is away from home and has no kitchen. The non-stick bottom makes this pot a breeze to clean up!I have dietary restrictions and can not go out and "grab a bite" like most other people, when I am not near my house. I especially recommend this pot to anyone who may suffer the same problem as me. I would be lost without this pot, when I need to be away from home.:-)
